Shiatsu massage
Nicky Abell-Francis
Shiatsu massage, Japanese for finger pressure, is an alternative Chinese therapy involving finger and palm pressure and a series of stretches along the meridian (energy pathways). There are numerous benefits to this type of massage including: relaxation, stress-relief, soothing muscle pain, nausea, anxiety and depression.
How is shiatsu performed?
This massage is conducted on a futon mat on fully-clothed clients. We ask you about your lifestyle and medical history, along with what you want to gain from your treatment. We will ask you about your diet, sleeping pattern, exercise routine, emotions, digestive and bowel activity. This will give us an overall sense of how your body is responding to your daily routine. The massage itself can include stretches to improve flexibility and posture-correction. We will also teach you a few simple, self-healing exercises to perform at home. A session involves consultation approx 15mins and treatment around 45mins to 1 hour. First treatments taking slightly longer due to a more in depth consultation is required.
What are the advantages of shiatsu?
Rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation of body tissue, significantly benefits from shiatsu massage. The treatment strengthens muscles and improves the circulation. Shiatsu helps to relax the body, meaning they can help towards alleviating pain caused by migraines. Circulation is improved due to increased blood flow, reducing the effect migraines have on the body. Shiatsu is strongly beneficial for a number of anatomical systems including the Nervous system, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal and reproductive systems.
What specific conditions can shiatsu help?
In the past we have helped clients overcome back pain, migraines, whiplash injuries, neck stiffness, joint paint, reduced mobility, digestive problems, menstrual problems, arthritis, asthma, sports injuries, depression and pregnancy/childbirth issues.
Am I eligible for a shiatsu massage?
Although shiatsu is a safe therapy, it should be avoided if you have an infectious disease, acute feverish illness, if you’ve had a major operation in the last three months or experienced internal bleeding or clots. Avoid shiatsu massage treatment if you have a tumour, hernia, fractures, open wounds or immediately after radiation/chemotherapy.
