Counselling - Amber Middlemiss MBACP (Accred)

How can Counselling help?

Counselling - Amber MiddlemissMy counselling practice is rooted in the belief that, if given the right conditions of warmth, non-judgementalism, acceptance and understanding, people can resolve issues, work through problems and find greater levels of peace and self-acceptance.

I always value and affirm the experience of the client, and at the same time I am prepared to offer a different viewpoint, to challenge ways of thinking and, if appropriate, use and teach techniques such as Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Art Therapy.

This approach has proven to be effective over my twelve years of experience working with relationship and family issues, anxiety, depression, abuse, low self-esteem, terminal illness, bereavement, spirituality and pastoral issues and many other types of problem including loss of companion animals.

How do I work?

I see the process as a shared endeavour with you, the client, taking the lead with regard to content and direction, and me providing support, companionship and a fresh outlook embedded in my extensive training and experience of working with a wide variety of issues, and with people who may simply feel down, confused or as if they have lost their way.

I have also worked in a bereavement charity, in a local hospice offering support to patients and their families, and as a vet, where I offered support to bereaved pet owners. I am compassionate and caring whilst also able to hold firm professional and ethical boundaries, and confidentiality and discretion are at the heart of my practice.

What to expect in the first session

I understand that choosing to start therapy can be very daunting and I am more than happy to speak with you by phone before you decide if you want to book a session. In the first session we will discuss the boundaries of the counselling relationship and any worries, concerns or other issues that you may have. I will also need to gain a brief medical history from you including your GP's name and address in case of emergency. At the end of this session it will be up to you whether or not you wish to continue seeing me. What you bring to counselling will be unique and so the number of sessions required will vary with each individual, and will proceed at your pace, booking each session week by week. Sessions are £45 for 50 minutes.
